Kentucky’s diverse female creatives celebrate strength, growth & community

They are passionate.

They are creatives.

They are colorful.

And they’re women.

Nearly 10 years ago, Octane Design Studios began as a minority owned graphic firm based in Lexington KY. Recently in its growth it curated a wider collaborative community embracing women owned businesses growing in the industry.

“This was a selective process based on relationships built but also in the lives Octane has been able to touch through its marketing products and services.”, said Octane owner, designer Danielle Meadows-Stinnett.  “I knew that I had something special that was steadily growing and taking a life of its own.”

Recently, Octane hosted its first mini retreat / holiday styled photoshoot for its partnered vendors. The holiday photoshoot was a collaboration of its four minority owned southeast based partnered vendors: brand strategist Samantha Johnson of SamanhattanPR, lifestyle & bridal photographer Michelle Franzetti or Franzetti Photography, Shalon Thomas event designer or Passionate Event Designs, & Jacqueline Rowan quilter, crafter and woodworker of JRow Everything.

All of the businesses are women owned and independently ran. All are ‘boss babes’ in cities striving to embrace more diverse leadership within its economic growth.

“With the holiday season approaching we naturally take less and less time for ourselves and put everything into our business.” Said Stinnett. Knowing “the ladies” would see this as a “work day” the goal of the day was to use some time to pamper them in the process.

Stinnett says the day was dedicated in part as a mini retreat for women business owners to experience a “self care / day out” being glammed up by a professional makeup artist, taking professional headshots and relaxing with a catered lunch before the holiday season officially begins.

“As women business owners we realize the weight of not “fitting in”. That some days will be filled with rejections, kids runny noses and mid grade fevers while juggling multiple orders and “picture perfect” social media. We realize and mentally visualize the setbacks and emotionally prepare for the laptop happy dance when we win the big moments.”

And then there’s the emotional balance of feeling enough. In a industry that is just now embracing plus size women, women bosses of color and all the feels of #metoo. “Octane is built on a platform of fellowship, building each other up and holding each other accountable in our goals personally and professionally.” says Stinnett.

For Octane, sales have more than doubled this year with featured work in regional publications and blogs. Almost all of them are collaborations with there partnered vendors. “Community is everything.”

The biggest highlights of the day were the formal group photo together and creating their own ugly sweaters as part of Octane’s Ugly Sweater Workshop event publicly held at Pivot Brewing November 29 in Lexington.

“We’re just a bunch of Kentucky girls, barefoot in our passions, celebrating our best selves in the skin we’re in. It’s a powerful statement.“
